In just a few hours the 2008 Beijing Olympics will be opening. As the economy is slowing down and the online advertising industry is also slowing down, surprising sponsors and advertisers has increased their ad spending for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Many advertisers has included the Olympic theme within their ads to show their spirit for the Olympics, and this year there are a lot of unique ideas in the world of marketing. I’m not s ure if any of you has been marketed to with Bluetooth technology, but I’m sure people in Beijing entering hotspots will have the ‘first’ experience.

Coca-Cola the official sponsor of the 2008 Beijing Olympics has partnered with Pioco to broadcast commercials via Bluetooth equipped cell phones. Pioco a Chinese marketing firm has set up a network of thousands of hotspots the company set up at Olympic stadiums, restaurants, hotels, clubs and other venues throughout Beijing and Shanghai.

How it works is that when a cell phone user with Bluetooth technology enters a hotspot they will be asked if they want to receive content from Coke. Once accepted, their phone will begin downloading Coke’s ad.

This is a really neat idea and I believe it will really help advertisers interested in local advertising to reach their targeted audiences. As a professional in the online advertising field what do you thing of broadcasting commercials via Bluetooth equipped cell phones?

As an advertiser, or an agency will you welcome the idea?
